5 cities to visit in Belgium

Today is the Belgian National Day! As a Belgian, I wanted to write something for the occasion. And that’s how I came up with the idea of this post about Belgium. If you don’t really know Belgium, you probably only know Brussels, the capital, and maybe Brugges, a very touristic city. But there are many more cities to see! In this article, I introduce you 5 cities to visit in Belgium.

#1 Ghent

Ghent is my favorite city in Belgium. This town is absolutely beautiful! The main place to see is Korenmarkt, the central square. You will see the 3 towers of Ghent (the belfry, St Niklaas Church, and St Baafs Cathedral). Visiting the churches and the cathedral is free and it’s worth it. Not far away, there is an old castle in the middle of the town! You can visit it. Don’t miss the boat tour so you can see places that you can’t reach by foot. Have a look at my article 1 day in Gent!

#2 Namur

Namur is the capital of Wallonia, the French-speaking region of Belgium. I spent 3 years there for my bachelor and I enjoyed every moment! This is a beautiful city. Here are some must-do: shopping in the main street, climb up the citadel for a nice view, and wandering in the “old Namur”. If you visit Namur the third weekend of September, you will enjoy the Fêtes de Wallonie, a major event in Wallonia. Try the Péket, an alcohol that Belgian drink at this event.

#3 Bruges

After Brussels, Bruges is probably the most famous city in Belgium. This city has the nickname of “The Venice of the North” because of the canals. You will fall in love with this city. The architecture is quite medieval and the streets are super cute. I advise you to visit 2 museums: Fries Museum and Chocolate Museum. Very interesting and of course, you can eat fries and chocolate!

#4 Antwerp

Antwerp, in the North of Belgium, is the 2nd biggest city of the country. It’s well known to be the diamond capital of the world and you can visit the Diamond Museum. But the most known place in Antwerp is the zoo, who attracts thousands of visitors per year. Moreover, Antwerp is a paradise for fashion lovers, with all the shopping malls,  shopping streets, and boutiques.

#5 Brussels

Last but not least, you can’t miss Brussels, the capital of Belgium but also the capital of Europe! Here are some places to see: Atomium, Manneken Pis, Cinquentenaire Park, Mont des Arts, Grand Place and many more! Brussels has also a lot of museums.

What about food?

When visiting Belgium, don’t forget to try all the local specialties! Chocolate, waffles, speculoos, Belgian beers, fries, and mussels!

Belgium is not super big, so if you are in the country for a few days, you can easily visit all these cities 🙂
