5 things to do in Vienna

Vienna, the imperial city, makes a lot of people dream. I was one of these people, I always wanted to visit Vienna. However, I set my expectations too high and I’ve been a bit disappointed! Don’t get me wrong, I still liked it! I mostly appreciated the beautiful architecture of the palaces and I liked learning more about the Habsburg’s history. You’re planning a trip to Vienna? Here are 5 nice things to do in the Austrian capital.

5 things to do in Vienna

#1 Schönbrunn Palace

Vienna is an imperial city, well-known for its beautiful palaces. It’s also the city of Sissi, the famous Austrian empress. A citytrip in Vienna is the good occasion to learn more about the life of the empress. I learned a lot about her by visiting the Schönbrunn and Hofburg Palaces. Schönbrunn is a beautiful yellow palace located outside of the citycenter. The visit is worth it, the palace is beautiful! Visit it with an audioguide (included in the price) you will learn a lot about the history of the palace. Before or after your visit, have a walk in the gardens behind the palace.

#2 Hofburg Palace

The Hofburg Palace is another beautiful palace which is located in the center of Vienna. The architecture is impressive! If you buy a ticket to visit the palace, you will visit 3 different areas: the Imperial Silver Collection, the Sissi museum and the appartments. I was not really interested in the Silver Collection. It’s an exhibition of the silver service that the royal families used for their dinners (cutlery, plates etc). The Sissi museum is very interesting though, and the appartments are beautiful!

Note: the appartments in the Hofburg palace and the Schönbrunn palace are quite similar. The audioguide will tell you the same story. If you have to choose only one visit, I would advise to visit the Hofburg palace, and to go to Schönbrunn just to see the palace from the outside and the gardens.

#3 Opera or classical music concerts

It’s a MUST DO in Vienna: going to the opera or to a classical music concert. Even if you are not the biggest fan of classical music, it’s a nice experience to live in Vienna. There are many events during the whole year: at the opera, in churches, in palaces… You will find something that you like! I went to the Schönbrunn Palace’s Orangery for a classical music concert. There was an orchestra playing the most famous musics from Mozart and Strauss.

#4 Stephansdom (St Stephen’s Cathedral)

The main Cathedral of Vienna is the Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom in German). The inside is beautiful, but the coolest thing to do is to go on the top of the cathedral! You have to pay €5 for that, then an elevator will lead you to the roof. You will have a nice view on the city and you will see from closer the colored tiles of the roof.

#5 Karlskirche (St Charles’s Church)

Don’t forget to visit the beautiful St Charles’s Church! The entrance costs €8. There is something super cool in this church: there is an inside elevator that will bring you closer to the roof! You can see the roof painting from very close, it’s impressive!

Practical information

How to get around?

Depending on the distance you need to do, you can walk, take a tram or the bus. For cabs, you can use the app “Bolt”. The app is available in different countries and the prices vary from one country to another. Surprisingly, it was quite cheap in Vienna!

Budget

Vienna is one of the most expensive cities in Europe, but you can find accommodations and restaurants at affordable prices as well.

Accommodation

We stayed in the Pension Pharmador. We paid €265 for 3 nights for 2 persons. The room was clean and big enough, the staff was friendly and the breakfast was good. It’s also good located in the city. I recommend it!

I hope this article will help you to prepare your trip! If you have time, take the bus or the train and go 1 day to Bratislava, this city is super cool!

  1. Great post! I agree- Vienna is a great city but a tad disappointing, especially since it’s so expensive. The architecture was my favorite thing about Vienna, too.
