10 things to do in Valletta

Since I live in Malta, I’ve been several times to Valletta and I can honestly say that it’s one of the most beautiful city I’ve been to! That’s a must-do if you ever come to Malta. I give you in this article 10 things to do in Valletta.

10 things to do in valletta

#1 St John’s Co-Cathedral

I have to admit that the St John’s Co-Cathedral is not really impressive from the outside. But from the inside, it’s quite amazing! The paintings, frescoes, architecture… it’s absolutely beautiful! The official website of St John’s Co-Cathedral describes it as a “gem of Baroque art and architecture”.

#2 Upper Barrakka Gardens

I really like this place in Valletta. It’s a nice garden with a beautiful fountain. From there, you have a view on the “3 cities of Malta” and on the Great Harbour of Valletta.

#3 The Malta Experience

That’s a great visit when arriving in Malta. The Malta Experience is a 45min movie about the Maltese history, from Antiquity till nowadays. It’s quite expensive (16€) but totally worth it!

#4 Royal Theatre / Royal Opera

This is one of the first thing that caught my eye’s attention when I walked for the first time in Valletta. At the entrance of the city, you see buildings with a modern architecture. And right close to the Parliament, there is this old theatre, built in 1866 and partly destroyed during World War 2. Nowadays, it’s an open-air theatre.

#5 Grandmaster’s Palace

The Grandmaster’s Palace is one of the oldest buildings of Valletta. It was designed by the famous Maltese architect Gelormu Cassar and built in 1571. This building hosts the president’s office and the House of Representatives.

#6 Eat Maltese food

If you’re like me, you like to discover the local specialties when traveling. If you are in a hurry, you can grab a pastizzi, the typical Maltese snack. If you have more time, go to the restaurant and order a Maltese platter (olives, sundries tomatoes, bigilla, bread…).

#7 The Triton Fountain

You won’t miss it, it’s at the front of the city gate. It was extremely damaged and the politicians decided to restore it in 2017. The “new” one was inaugurated beginning of 2018.

#8 Cinema bar City Lights

This cinema bar broadcasts famous (and less famous) movies for free! The atmosphere is great, there are cinema posters on the walls and vintage decoration. They even give popcorns for free!

#9 Bridge bar

The place to go for the jazz lovers! You can sit outside, on the stairs (the bar gives pillows!) and enjoy live jazz music.

#10 Walk

I like to go to Valletta even if I have nothing special to do and just walk in the streets. Don’t forget to look up to see the typical maltese windows, called bow windows. They are usally green, blue or red and it makes the streets colorful. It’s lovely!
