10 things to do in Lisbon

Yellow trams, colorful houses and delicious smell of pastéis de nata… Welcome to Lisbon! I visited the Portuguese capital in March 2019 and I loved it! I only stayed for 3 days but I had the time to visit quite a lot. Planning to go there soon? Here are 10 things to do in Lisbon.

10 things to do in Lisbon

#1 Alfama

The Alfama is my favorite area of Lisbon. It’s there that I really felt the Portuguese vibe. Take good shoes because you will walk a lot, but it’s so worth it to get lost in the lovely colorful streets. Some old ladies are sitting the whole day at their doors and selling Ginjinha shots, a Portuguese alcool, for 1€.

#2 Praça do Comércio

The main square of Lisbon is absolutely lovely: yellow buildings, seaview… No doubt that we are in the south of Europe!

When I travel, I like to find the best view points of the city. The 1st one I’ve been too in Lisbon is the Rua Augusta Arch, situated in the Praça do Comércio. The view is quite nice!

#3 Elevador Santa Justa

Another spot to enjoy an amazing view of Lisbon is the Elevador Santa Justa. It’s a lift that brings you to a platform where you will have a 360° view of the city. In my opinion, the view from there is even better that at the Rua Augusta Arch.

#4 Belém tower

Belém is a city located outside Lisbon but not far away. The 2 main things to visit there are the tower and the Monastery. The tower is very beautiful, but I was a bit disappointed by the visit.

#5 Jerónimos Monastery

While in Belém, don’t forget to visit the Jerónimos Monastery. This monastery is more than 500 years old and is classified at the UNESCO world heritage.

#6 Eat pastéis de nata

I would love to go back to Portugal just to eat that, seriously! I ate like 10 of them in 3 days. Travel guides and blogs say the best ones are in the famous Pastéis de Belem, so I wanted to try them. IT WAS SO DAMN GOOOOD! I also really liked the ones at Manteigaria.

#7 Miradouros

The “miradourous” are viewpoints located on top of the hills that offer a beautiful view of Lisbon. In some of them you will find cafés or restaurants. That’s the perfect place to chill and watch the sunset.

#8 Castelo de São Jorge

It’s one of the places I liked the most in Lisbon. The castle is very old! We don’t know the exact date of construction but proofs say that it was already there at the 6th century B.C. The castle is situated on the highest hill of Lisbon, which makes it the best place to have the most beautiful view of the city!

#9 Covered markets

I like visiting covered markets when I travel and stop there for lunch or for a snack. In Lisbon I’ve been in the Time Out market and Campo de Ourique market. You will find everthing there: pasta, burgers, sandwiches… We had pesticos (Portuguese tapas) and for dessert, pasteis de nata of course.

#10 LX factory

Anciently a industrial site, the LX factory is now one of the coolest places in the Portuguese capital. You will find lots of original shops, bars and restaurants, and there’s a market on the Sunday afternoon. Have a look at the walls, there’s a lot of street art in this area.

TIP : if you plan to visit a lot, buy the Lisboa card. It costs 20€ for 24 hours, 34€ for 48 hours and 42€ for 72 hours and it gives you access to lot of tourist attractions like the Belem tower, the monastery, the Elevador Santa Justa, museums, cathedrals and many more.

I really liked Lisbon and its atmosphere and I can’t wait to visit more cities in Portugal!

  2. Portugal is high up on the list for my husband and I. To be honest my only concern is what would we do if we went outside of the summer when prices are cheaper but you have given me some great ideas. Now just to find a deal!
