10 things to do in Budapest

Budapest, the capital of Hungary, was on my to do list since a long time! I finally had the chance to discover it during a spring weekend. Its beautiful architecture immediately seduced me! Discover here 10 things to do in Budapest.

10 things to do in Budapest

#1 Visit the Hungarian Parliament

This is the iconic building of the city. The building you see on almost every pictures of Budapest. The hungarian Parliament is impressive, with a length of 268 meters and almost 700 rooms, it’s one of the biggest in Europe! It’s a beautiful building, you can’t take your eyes off it! Unfortunately, I didn’t have the opportunity to visit it because it was sold-out 🙁

TIP: book your ticket in advance to visit the Parliament. The visit is available in different languages.

#2 Go on the top of the St Stephens Basilica

Nice church from the oustide, and amazing from the inside! Paintings, statues, gold, marble… you litterally don’t know where to look. It’s one of the most beautiful churches I’ve ever seen. Don’t miss the panorama view on the top of the church! You need to pay for it (500HUF) but it’s totally worth it!

#3 Enjoy the view from the Fisherman’s Bastion

Probably my favourite place in Budapest! This building looks a bit like a princess castle! And the view from there is amazing.

TIP: go to the Fisherman’s Bastion just before the sun goes down, so you can enjoy a beautiful sunset but also a view on the illuminated city when the night comes!

#4 Have a look at the roof of the Matthias church

This church is so beautiful! The roof is decked with colorful roof tiles and it looks great! Unfortunately, it was closed so I didn’t visit it from the inside.

#5 Relax in Szechenyi baths

Relaxing in thermal baths is a must do in Budapest. But for me, the experience was not really relaxing… Lots of people, a part of the therms was under construction, and it was 28° so it was not really nice to be in warm water. In other words, I was disappointed by this experience, but glad to try it.

#6 Climb up to the citadel

Climb up to the citadel (or take the bus 27 if you don’t want to walk to much 😉 ) and enjoy a beautiful panorama on the city. I LOVE panoramas, but to be honest this was not my favourite. I prefered the view from the Fisherman’s Bastion and from the St Stephens Basilica.

#7 Walk through the Chain bridge

11 bridges are binding the 2 rives, Buda and Pest. The most famous is the Chain bridge, beautiful when it’s illuminated during the night.

#8 Enjoy a dinner cruise on the Danube

I experienced a dinner cruise on the Danube and it was super cool! We started with a beautiful sunset, then we enjoyed a cruise with a view on the lightened city. It was magic! On top, we had a “eat all what you can” hungarian buffet and live music!

Book your ticket here for the dinner cruise. Different options are available. I took the evening dinner cruise at 54€ (cruise, live music, buffet, 1 welcome drink, 1 glass of wine, 1 bottle of water).

#9 Stop at the Shoes on the Danube Bank

During the World War 2, Jewish were asked to take off their shoes before being killed and thrown into the Danube. In 2005, two artists decided to create shoes in metal, alongside the river, to the memory of the victims.

#10 Try the local cuisine

Another must do during a citytrip is to try (at least once) the local cuisine. I must admit that I wasn’t really conviced by the Hungarian food, even though I really liked the catfish/dumpling meal at the restaurant Arany Hordo. I totally recommand you this place! The terrace is very lovely and the staff is nice.

And you, have you ever been to Budapest? Or are you planning to visit it soon? Leave me a comment and tell me what you liked about the city!
